Constipation
Causes of constipation -
- Improper stool forming substance
- Lack of physical activity (especially in the elderly)
- Side effects of certain Medications
- Changes in life or routine such as pregnancy, aging, and travel
- Abuse of laxatives
- Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement
- Dehydration
- Improper Gastro-intestinal secretions
- Loss of intestinal tone
- Reduction in peristaltic movements
- Specific diseases or conditions, such as stroke (most common)
- Problems with the colon and rectum
- Problems with intestinal function (chronic idiopathic constipation)
Tips from Ayurveda

| Aahar (food) : |
- Food containing fibre like Wholemeal, granary and softgrain varieties of bread, vegetables
- Always consume freshly cooked food
- Food should not be taken in heavy quantity
- It should contain a lot of Sneha (ghee) which will facilitate easy passage of stools
- Drinking adequate quantity of water

- Avoid afternoon sleep after meals
- Proper exercise and walk can help build abdominal tone.

Basti ( enema ) :
- Procedure :
Enema of medicated oil ( Anuvasan ) / decoction ( Nirooha ) are given in a specific dose
Snehana & swedana is given before every Basti
- Time Period :
Oil enemas are always given after meals while decoction enemas are always given before meals
