Causes of constipation -
  • Improper stool forming substance
  • Lack of physical activity (especially in the elderly)
  • Side effects of certain Medications
  • Changes in life or routine such as pregnancy, aging, and travel
  • Abuse of laxatives
  • Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement
  • Dehydration
  • Improper Gastro-intestinal secretions
  • Loss of intestinal tone
  • Reduction in peristaltic movements
  • Specific diseases or conditions, such as stroke (most common)
  • Problems with the colon and rectum
  • Problems with intestinal function (chronic idiopathic constipation)
Tips from Ayurveda

Aahar (food) :
  1. Food containing fibre like Wholemeal, granary and softgrain varieties of bread, vegetables
  2. Always consume freshly cooked food
  3. Food should not be taken in heavy quantity
  4. It should contain a lot of Sneha (ghee) which will facilitate easy passage of stools
  5. Drinking adequate quantity of water


Vihaar (Regime) :
  1. Avoid afternoon sleep after meals
  2. Proper exercise and walk can help build abdominal tone.


Karmachikitsa  
Basti ( enema ) :
  • Procedure : Enema of medicated oil ( Anuvasan ) / decoction ( Nirooha ) are given in a specific dose Snehana & swedana is given before every Basti

  • Time Period : Oil enemas are always given after meals while decoction enemas are always given before meals
